How architectural shingles age
Architectural shingles are built from two or more laminated layers, which gives them their shadowed, dimensional look and a longer rated life than 3-tab shingles. But the asphalt in them dries out the same way. You'll see it as granule wash-off in the gutters, lightening ridge lines, and edges that feel stiff underfoot.
Because there's more asphalt in each shingle, architectural roofs often have more left to save when the aging shows. That makes them frequent candidates for treatment, when the inspection confirms the mat is sound.
What treatment does for them
