The number

Their guidance allows reapplication about every five years, so a roof that keeps qualifying can stack more than one cycle. That's how a 15-year-old roof can realistically be carried into its mid-twenties before replacement money ever leaves your pocket.

What moves the number

• Condition at treatment. A roof treated at the first signs of aging has more to preserve than one treated at the edge of brittleness. Earlier is better. See the signs to watch for.
• Shingle type. Thicker architectural shingles carry more asphalt to work with than 3-tab shingles.
